Mrs. Penny and our roofing service
We installed a new roof for Mrs. Penny four years ago. This year the town she lives in had a terrible hail storm. Penny's neighbor called and asked if she would like for her to send over her roofing contractor to look and see if the hail damaged her roof. Penny said proudly “No, I have my own roof professional I trust.”
She called me to ask if I would inspect her roof for hail damage and so I did. I found many damaged shingles that were impacted by hail. The hail is the equivalent of someone taking a baseball bat and striking the shingles every square inch of the roof. This type of storm breaks the asphalt knocking off the granules exposing the fiberglass shingles base. I took photos and made an insurance report for materials and labor breakdown.
A week later a check from the insurance company arrived. As painful as it were for Penny to have a four-year-old roof replaced, she had all the confidence and trust in the world in our company. This is a proud moment that humbles a contractor like me. It’s the moment that pays you back for all of the hard work and effort you put into every job.
I designed and ordered a complete roof system by GAF. Coordinated the dumpster and materials delivery with the customer and gave her a start date. I continuously look at the weather waiting for a pocket of two days no rain.
Start of construction
When we arrive, I make it clear to the family “This is now a construction zone and be careful to treat it as such. We tarp the roof off covering the home, flowers, bushes, and grass with heavy-duty nylon tarp. We then start to remove the old shingles and nails down to the roof decking. The roof decking is your plywood in this case.
As the old roofing materials hit the ground surface, we quickly have our men remove it and discard the waste into a roll off dumpster. Then we carefully back nail the plywood surface cleaning it from the smallest debris and remove tarps.
My very first business was flooring. When you prepare a vinyl kitchen floor surface before installation for the best result, you must keep an extremely clean subfloor! The smallest grain of sand or piece of anything will be felt by your bare feet. I put the same type of quality as I do when I do a roof or a kitchen floor. The results are fantastic.
Penny and our roofing company
The roof was 2,900 square feet, using the complete product line from GAF, it took us two days. Penny is happy it’s over, and her house was returned to her and her daughter as good as new, Again! There is a sweet ending. A week after we finished the roof Penny called us and took us out to a beautiful dinner with her daughter.
Thank you, Penny! My client and friend!
